1. Acute Insomnia
This type of
insomnia lasts for few days to few weeks. This is the most common type of insomnia
occurring in people. Sleep experts suggest that this type of insomnia due to
stress mainly. So it is referred as the adjustment insomnia. In case of
stressful situation like death of the loved one or loss of job can be cause of
acute insomnia. Apart from this environmental factors like excess light and
noise in room can hamper the sleep pattern. Jet lag is also a reason for acute
insomnia. Jet lag happens when the person travels one-time zone to a different
time zone, so the body takes time to adjust to the present time zone.
2. Chronic insomnia
In this
condition the person is unable to sleep for few weeks altogether. This could
extend till a month also so doctor intervention becomes necessary in such
cases. Chronic insomnia is said to be associated with some underlying
condition. A common cause of this type of insomnia is comorbidity. Medical
conditions like diabetes or depression anxiety can lead to chronic insomnia. Apart
from this repetitive jet lag and rotating shift work can also hamper the sleep
patterns of the person.
3. Onset insomnia: In this the person is unable to initiate the sleep.
This type of insomnia can be chronic and acute. According to research it is
suggests that psychological and psychiatric issues are to be blamed for this
type of insomnia. External factors like caffeine and nicotine inhibit the sleep
hence making it difficult to be in restful position.
There are
numbers of therapies related to the insomnia. However cognitive-behavioural
therapy tops the list because it gives relaxation and relief from anxiety and
stress. Sleep hygiene should be maintained wherein proper bed and comfortable
clothes will help to get better sleep.
